History of Grama Panchayat
The ancient Thekkumkur Vadakkumkur fort, which is the remnant of the democracy, stretches from Kochi to Pandi with a width of 100 links (1 chain). This fort passes through this panchayat for a length of about 8 kilometers. The panchayat is an area where very old Tharavattukars have settled. There is evidence that this panchayat, which is a migration area, was inhabited in 1680. Many families have taken their house names from place names. When we examine the history, we understand that an educational institution was established on the banks of the Nagapuzha in this panchayat. Then it spread to areas like Kallurkkad, Kaloor, Thazhuvamkunnu. Educational institutions were established in this panchayat in connection with Christian churches. The educational scene in this panchayat started from the Ashan Kalaris. It later took the form of Kudipallikkuddas. In 1792, a thatched church-St. Mary's Church-was built in Nakapuzha and palm leaf books preserved there testify that at that time, Ashan Kalaris were functioning in the surrounding area. The church itself bore the expenses of the Ashans who taught in these Kalaris. Education was provided to everyone regardless of caste and religion. Early history also testifies to the fact that mostly boys went out to study. Church records show that there was a seminary in Nakapuzha at that time and that Rev. Jacob Malpan of Ezhanikkad taught seminary students. Kaloor (Veloorkkara) and Kalloorkkadu are the districts that, like Nakapuzha, took the initiative in making changes according to the needs of the times. In these places too, Kudipallikkuds operated in conjunction with the places of worship. Recognized schools came into existence in Kallurkkad in 1906, in Nakappuzha in 1912 and in Vellurkara in 1922. There were only primary education facilities here. For higher classes, one had to go outside the panchayat. Class 10 education became possible within the panchayat itself when high schools like IMHS Kallur in 1951, SAHS Kallurkkad in 1957 and SMHS Nagappuzha in 1982 were started. Kallurkkad panchayat, which is predominantly inhabited by people belonging to Hindu and Christian religions, has a mixed culture of the aforementioned religions. It can be said that the people of this panchayat have a very high cultural standard because Christians are ready to accept and accept the exemplary practices of Hinduism and Hindus are ready to accept and respect the acceptable practices of Christianity. Nagapuzha St. Mary's Church in Kallurkkad Panchayat is a famous pilgrimage center in Kerala. Lakhs of devotees of various castes and religions arrive for the festival held from September 1 to 15. The main Hindu temples are Kallurkkad Sree Krishna Swamy Temple, Kallurkkad Devi Temple, and Nagapuzha Shanthukad Devi Temple. These are also very ancient. People of all castes and religions enthusiastically participate in the festivals of these temples. The best library in Ernakulam district is the Cosmo Politic Reading Club and Library in the 2nd ward of this panchayat.
